Taylor had an armload of books by the time she left Pastor Dave’s office. This wasn’t how she had planned for today to go at all. Outside, she figured her best bet was the campus bus, so she crossed the street and managed to catch one that would end near her dorm. She chose an unoccupied seat by the window near the front and had just taken a glance at the last book Pastor Dave had given her, Metaphoric Awakening, when the bus rolled to a stop to exchange students.

Her attention was fixed on the wording on the front cover, so much so, that without warning and when the bus driver let off the gas and started forward, she almost lost control of the stack. Anchoring her arms around them, she barely caught them from flying out of her control. “Ugh.”

“Oh, man, I hear you,” a young woman said nearly falling into the seat right next to Taylor. “If this day could get any worse, I don’t want to know how.”

Holding the books as best she could, Taylor looked over. The young woman had blonde hair that seemingly had no intention of staying in the ponytail that was supposed to be holding it.

“Can we just fast forward to Spring Break already?” the young woman asked without pause.

If Taylor was having trouble with her own belongings, the young woman was about to completely lose all of hers.

“Oh, sorry,” the young woman said, trying to corral her things. “I’m Niki. Not that you care.” She laughed. “But just the same.” Her gaze caught on Taylor’s stack of books. “Wow. That’s a lot of books, and I thought I was struggling. Guess we’re all in the same boat, huh? Too much work, not enough time. It’s a thing.” Somehow keeping all of her random belongings from spilling all over the floor, Niki smoothed her hand over her hair as the bus slid to a stop once again. “Call me crazy, but why they put the senior dorms all the way over on the other side of campus from classes… don’t know who designed that system.”

“Oh. So you live in the senior dorms?” Taylor asked, finally getting a word in.

“Since August. Loved the idea until I realized everything else was like two miles away.”

“You’re a senior then.”

“Yeah, technically, but I’ve got through the middle of August to finish up. Stupid schedule. I wanted to take another online class this semester, but noooo… Okay, so technically, I took 21 hours, but that was because all of a sudden, someone realized, ‘Oh, Niki’s short a math credit. Wow. How did that happen? Hm. I wouldn’t know.’ I swear, they do that on purpose.”

The bus transferred more students. Only two more stops.

“Anyway,” Niki said with a dramatic sigh. “Long story short, I had to CLEP Math for Liberal Arts, which is hilarious because I got an A in Trig three semesters ago. Not that I wanted to take Calculus for that last credit. I’m not insane or anything.
